ASU Next Generation Service Corps (NGSC), an organization focused on veterans’ welfare and dedicated to creating social change in our world, is partnering with AZ Territorial Chapter’s AUSA Young Professional’s to highlight veteran awareness and raise funds to further civil-military understanding.

ASU’s NGSC is a four-year leadership development program where students study their chosen major, engage in practical elements of leadership, learn cross-sector collaboration and take internships each summer working on real issues in the public, private and nonprofit sectors all while pursuing their own chosen social mission. NGSC students train directly with ROTC cadets and midshipmen in leadership exercises and field training exercises. This is a recognition that civilian service and military service are really just two sides of the same coin; both make us stronger as a nation. NGSC is made up Corps Members from 65 different majors, and is a part of the ASU Public Service Academy, which consists of NGSC, ROTC, and the Veterans Fellowship Corps (VFC).

You are invited to attend the premiere of the film “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk” on Friday, 2 December 2016. We are co-hosting with ASU’s NGSC a special showing of the movie at Harkins at Tempe Marketplace located Tempe Marketplace, 2000 East Rio Salado Parkway #1160, Tempe, AZ 85281. Tickets are $8 and may be purchased through the Yapsody Box Office.

In the production, nineteen-year-old private Billy Lynn, along with his fellow soldiers in Bravo Squad, becomes a hero after a harrowing Iraq battle and is brought home temporarily for a victory tour. Through flashbacks, culminating at the spectacular halftime show of the Thanksgiving Day football game, what really happened to the squad is revealed, contrasting the realities of the war with America’s perceptions. The movie will be followed by a presentation and discussion with a panel made up of veterans and civil leaders.

The proceeds from this event will help finance the travel and attendance of several ASU Public Service Academy students and Sun Devil ROTC Battalion cadets to the 2017 AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition held in Washington DC.

We would greatly appreciate your support in our mission. We will be accepting monetary donations and items for raffles and giveaways. Attendance at the event is highly encouraged as well! Please contact Jeanne J. Blaes, PhD at blaesjj@gmail.com or Arianna Freedom Lew, NGSC Team Leader, Veteran’s Welfare Mission Team #11 at aflew@asu.edu for more information or to assist with or donate to this event.
